What Size Rug Do I Need? Living Room & Bedroom Guide

BAZAAR G · RUG GUIDES & INSPIRATION

A rug should fit the furniture arrangement and the way you move around it. Start with the area you want to bring together, then compare rug dimensions. A room labelled “small” can still need a generous rug if the sofa is wide.

The quickest check: mark the rug outline on the floor with removable tape. Put the furniture where you want it, open nearby doors and walk through the room before choosing a size.

Living room: measure the seating area

For a connected look, try placing the front feet of the sofa and nearby armchairs on the rug. Let the rug extend beyond the sofa at each end where your floor plan allows. In a larger room, a rug that holds all the furniture feet can define the whole seating zone.

A smaller rug in front of the sofa can work as an accent, but check that it does not look isolated beneath the coffee table. If you are between sizes, test both outlines on the floor rather than judging from a product photo.

Rug size A layout worth testing Check first
160 × 230 cm Compact sitting area or a rug in front of a smaller sofa Will the 230 cm edge suit your sofa width?
200 × 290 / 200 × 300 cm Seating group with front furniture feet on the rug Can armchairs reach the rug comfortably?
240 × 330 / 240 × 340 cm Larger sofa or a broader seating arrangement Are doors and walking routes clear?
280 × 380 / 300 × 400 cm Generous living room with more furniture on the rug Have you measured the entire furniture footprint?

These are starting points, not room-size guarantees. Dimensions vary between ranges: a 240 × 330 cm rug and a 240 × 340 cm rug are different sizes.

A simple sofa example

If your sofa is 220 cm wide, a rug with a 230 cm edge gives only 5 cm beyond each end when centred. A 290 cm edge gives 35 cm. Either may fit the room, but the second creates a wider frame around the sofa. The rug’s other dimension still needs to suit the coffee table and seats opposite.

Bedroom: measure the bed frame, not only the mattress

Include the outer frame and any bench at the foot of the bed. For a rug beneath the lower part of the bed, aim for a comfortable landing area on both sides and at the foot. Around 50–70 cm of visible rug is a useful starting point where space permits.

For example, if a bed frame is 165 cm wide and you want 60 cm of rug at each side, you need about 285 cm across that direction. A rug with a 290 or 300 cm edge may work when positioned across the bed. Check how far the other edge reaches under and beyond it.

Bedside runners are another option if a large rug would crowd wardrobes or doorways. Keep them secure and clear of opening doors.

Dining room: allow space for pulled-out chairs

Measure the table, then test an extra 60–75 cm on every side as a starting allowance. Pull the chairs out as someone would to sit down; their feet should stay on the rug. Large chairs or a wide pull-out movement may need more room.

A low, even surface is generally easier for chairs to move across than a deep textured pile. Consider spills and the individual care instructions alongside the measurements.

Your final measuring checklist

  • Record the usable floor area, furniture widths and door swings in centimetres.
  • Test the exact listed size with removable tape.
  • Check rug thickness plus any underlay beneath doors.
  • Confirm the selected variant, current availability and size tolerances on the product page.
